研究実績の概要 |
The main research achievement for 2022-2023 was the organization of an international conference on Shakespeare and translation, “Found in Translation: Understanding Shakespeare through Intercultural Dialogue,” from 17 to 19 September 2022 at Waseda University: https://w3.waseda.jp/assoc-shakesfit/top-page/
This conference of 42 delegates and close to 100 participants brought together members of the JSPS project with overseas scholars to consider the potential translation studies has in opening new windows for Shakespeare studies. The discussions about new perspectives to Shakespeare studies ranged from how translations can add new dimensions to textual criticism, performance studies, bibliographical studies, media studies, and adaptation studies.

理由
We succeeded in holding the international conference on Shakespeare and translation, which was the main goal for 2022-2023. This led to the organization of a follow-up symposium titled “Looking at Shakespeare from the Non-Anglophone World” at the Shakespeare Institute on 2 February 2023; one of the projects members, Norimasa Morita, along with an early-career member who has joined the project from this April, Reiko Ishibuchi, were featured in the symposium. At the moment, the members continue to work on their respective projects, which plans to touch base in September.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
At the moment, we are planning a follow-up symposium at Waseda University that will feature project member Daniel Gallimore along with Michael Seanger of Morthwestern University, a leading scholar in this field and collaborator with project member Hiromi Fuyuki. There are also plans to meet with Jessica Chiba of the Shakespeare Institute this month to discuss the possibility of organizing another symposium or academic exchange in the UK as well as to continue talks on how best to proceed with the securing of a publisher for a collection of papers from the “Found in Translation” conference last year.
