Drawing on evidence generated from comparative field studies in rural Indonesia, Japan and Nepal, this research project examines why young people leave agriculture and rural areas amidst rising youth unemployment and declining rural agriculture. The project will produce nuanced theoretical understandings of young people’s sectoral, spatial, and temporal engagements in rural Asia. It will also provide highly useful policy insights of regional and global significance for addressing youth unemployment, poverty, and agricultural decline in rural areas.

Globally, young people are increasingly turning away from agriculture and rural futures. Who will be farmers in the future? Young people’s reluctance to engage in agriculture is associated with the critical problems of youth unemployment, agricultural decline, and poverty, particularly in Asia. Drawing on evidence generated from comparative field studies in rural Indonesia, Japan and Nepal, our project aims to offer nuanced understandings of the complex relationships between young people and agriculture in rural Asia.
Our research project made three key achievements last year among many others. First, we completed fieldwork in all countries, which involved questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews with rural youth and other stakeholders. This fieldwork has resulted in a rich database, providing a foundation for writing publications. Second, our project convened a panel on ‘Youth, Mobility, and Agrarian Change in Rural Asia: Insights from Indonesia, Japan, and Nepal’ at the annual conference of the Association for Asian Studies in Seattle (14-17 March 2024). We presented key findings of research on youth, agriculture and related issues based on fieldwork in Japan, Nepal, and Indonesia. Finally, in terms of publications, a manuscript on the youth-agriculture disconnect submitted to a reputed international journal is under review. We have also drafted papers, which will be published in an edited book or special journal issue.
