研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The current research project aims at resolving seismic structures in the Earth's mantle transition zone, on the basis of in situ P- and S-wave elastic wave velocity and synchrotron X-ray measurements on inhomogeneous rocks under high pressure, "waveform inversion method" and numerical simulations.

研究実績の概要 |
P- and S-wave elastic velocities are unique tools we have to explore the composition and structures of the inaccessible deep Earth, by comparing high pressure mineral physics data with seismological observations. Here we aim at resolving seismic structures across the Earth's mantle transition zone, on the basis of in situ P- and S-wave elastic wave velocity and synchrotron X-ray measurements , "waveform inversion method" and numerical simulations. In this FY, we measured the elastic wave velocities of olivine + MORB samples with varying MORB content up to 10 wt.%, at the beamline BL04B1 in SPring-8. The high-pressure experiments were conducted at 10 GPa and T up to 2000 K, which should represent the mantle region above the 410 km seismic discontinuity.

理由
The experimental set up and softwares at the beamline BL04B1 in SPring-8 were improved, allowing for faster and automatic X-ray and sound velocity measurements upon compression or increasing temperature.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the next FY, we plan to measure the elastic wave velocities of Wadsleyite + MORB samples and Ringwoodite + MORB with varying MORB content. The high-pressure experiments will be conducted at pressures of 12 to 20 GPa and T up to 2000 K, which should represent mantle region in between depths of 410 km and 520 km in the mantle transition region. In parallel, we will work on syntheses of pyrolite + MORB samples for additional measurements in more natural rock composition. Our second objective is to improve the capabilities of high-temperature measurements by implementing a cooling system to the first-stage anvils, in the multianvil apparatus.
