研究開始時の研究の概要

Agricultural fertilizer, mainly from high chemical fertilizer usage, significantly contributes to nitrogen pollution in urban water bodies, especially in Asian cities. Effective watershed management is vital for addressing the complexity of urban pollution. Studying how these practices control agricultural nitrogen pollution in urban water bodies is crucial. This research aims to create a watershed management-based index to improve water quality in Asian urban water bodies by reducing agriculture nitrogen pollution.

研究実績の概要

The primary aim of this study is to identify suitable watershed management practices for mitigating urban water pollution. This research will investigate the impact of such practices on urban water pollution through two main avenues: the management of pollution sources and the management of urban green spaces. Thus, in order to achieve this study's objectives, two concurrent studies have been devised as follows:
Study 1: Assessing the Feasibility of Wastewater-Based Irrigation for Urban Agriculture in Underserved Settlements as a Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Strategy.
Study 2: Exploring the Role of Wetland Centers in Urban Wetland Conservation in Asian Cities.
Study 1:This investigation aims to evaluate the viability of employing wastewater-based irrigation as a means to address urban water pollution, particularly in underserved settlements - a significant point source of such pollution. The study is structured as a case study within Colombo City, Sri Lanka.
Study 2:Three wetland centers situated in different Asian countries have been chosen as case study locations: the Yatsu-higatha Nature Observation Center in Narashino, Japan; the Sungei Buloh Wetland Park in Singapore; and the Diyasaru Wetland Park in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The roles of these centers in urban wetland conservation will be examined across three dimensions: educational initiatives, recreational and tourism programs, and efforts in biodiversity and ecosystem restoration.

理由

The initial literature survey for the studies has been completed.
Study areas for the case studies have been selected, and relevant organizations in Japan, Singapore, and Sri Lanka, pertaining to the studies, have been identified. Initial communications with these organizations have commenced.
Questionnaires for interviews and surveys have been developed and received ethical approval from the Research Ethics Committee of the Institute for Future Initiative, The University of Tokyo. An initial field visit was conducted at the Yatsu-higatha Nature Observation Center in Narashino, Japan. Subsequently, a field visit to the Sungei Buloh Wetland Park in Singapore took place from March 26th to March 31st, 2024, during which physical interviews were conducted with the park management.
Abstracts submitted to the 10th World Water Forum in Bali 2024 and the Urban Food System Symposium in Ohio, USA, have been accepted. These abstracts are centered around the themes of wastewater irrigation and urban agriculture.
Collaborated to the “Water for Circular Society” project at the United Nations University - Institute for the Advance Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS).

今後の研究の推進方策

Surveys and interviews will be conducted in both Colombo and Japan as part of the studies on wastewater irrigation and urban wetland conservation.
Data collected from both studies will undergo analysis to comprehend the role of watershed management in mitigating urban water pollution in Asia, including nitrogen pollution.
Findings will be disseminated through publication in scientific peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences.
Scientific publications will primarily rely on secondary data concerning urban water pollution.
Collaborate and assist to the “Water for Circular Society” project at the UNU-IAS.
Policies related to watershed management aimed at mitigating urban water pollution in Asia will be developed based on the results obtained.
