研究成果の概要

本研究は、20世紀を代表する芸術文化史家ニコラウス・ペヴスナーが、その多角的研究を通して確立するに至ったペヴスナー特有の芸術文化史学の基本構造を明らかにしようとするものであった。1930年代初頭、第２次世界大戦目前の混乱期に、彼の中には「芸術文化史研究にも現代社会と現代人に対して果たし得る実際的役割が存在するはずである」という確信が芽生えた。実用主義者であったペヴスナーは、人間の芸術的営みが、何かしらの実用性、実用的存在意義をもつべきであることを常に主張していたが、自らが建築、絵画、デザインの諸領域を横断的に扱って展開した芸術文化史研究にも同様の実用的役割があると信じていた。
