研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The goal of this research is to use neutrinos to quickly inform the astronomy and physics communities that a supernova explosion is occurring in our Milky Way Galaxy.
Neutrinos arrive *before* the light from the explosion. This is because dying stars produce huge numbers of neutrinos just before the light of their bright, fiery deaths is generated.
EGADS (Employing Gadolinium to Autonomously Detect Supernovas), an existing University of Tokyo neutrino detector located in the Kamioka Observatory next to the famous Super-Kamiokande experiment, will be upgraded specifically for this purpose.
