Fluorescent protein (FP)-based sensors are powerful tools that enable researchers to visualize biological processes in cells and organisms. We have pioneered methods to accelerate the development and optimization of new FP-based sensors. We now propose to use these methods to create a series of new high-performance sensors for important biomolecules, expand the color range into the near-infrared (NIR) region, and create sensors that “integrate” biological signals over time. This work will massively expand the target palette, the color palette, and the sensing mechanisms, of FP-based sensors.
