| 研究開始時の研究の概要 |
In the first year of the project, working with partner universities in Japan and the UK, corpora of written texts collected from students in the UK (UKC) and L1 Japanese learners (LJC) will be prepared for analysis. Corpus analysis of the UKC will begin. In the second and third years, we will analyse the LJC and work on developing IELTS knowledge-based vocabulary and collocation lists.

| 研究実績の概要 |
Following the research plan, this year we focused on the overseas corpus, collecting and analyzing data from 1,344 IELTS essays written by presessional students at a UK university. We set up the corpus, then processed the texts using Python, employing spaCy and regular expressions (regex) to extract a range of linguistic features relevant to second language writing. A preliminary analysis was conducted, focusing on lexical diversity, lexical sophistication, and collocational patterns. This involved calculating measures such as type-token ratio (TTR), moving-average type-token ratio (MATTR), and mutual information (MI) scores, as well as assessing the use of mid-frequency vocabulary and academic collocations. The findings were presented at several conferences, where we drew attention to the limitations of existing natural language processing (NLP) tools in reliably identifying collocations and mid-frequency vocabulary in L2 learner writing. These insights are helping to shape the next stage of the project.

理由
The project is generally proceeding as planned. We successfully met most of this year’s objectives and prepared the corpora for the next phase of analysis. Progress on the overseas corpus has been smooth. However, work on the Japanese corpus has been slightly delayed due to some unforeseen difficulties in processing the data. Adjustments to the research timeline and methodology have been made to account for this, ensuring continued alignment with the project’s overall goals.
|
| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
We will continue refining our analytical tools and apply them to both the overseas and the Japanese corpora. Our revised tools and methodology are now better suited to the project’s aims and will ensure the effective handling of both written and spoken texts in the final analysis phase. The Japanese corpus will be prioritised to ensure balanced progress across datasets. The next stage will focus on extracting and validating key linguistic predictors of L2 writing proficiency. This will inform the development of pedagogical applications to support IELTS preparation and academic writing instruction.
