This research investigates the war narratives of reporters dispatched to battlefields in Meiji Japan.
1) Investigate reporting of the Seinan War (1877). In particular, compare the writings of Fukuchi Gen'ichiro (Tokyo nichi nichi shinbun) with rivals Inukai Tsuyoshi and Fujita Mokichi (Yubin hochi shinbun).
2) Investigate reporting of the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). The main focus will be on two reporters from Kokumin shinbun, Kunikida Doppo and Matsubara Iwagoro.
3) Investigate reporting of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Capture the breadth of reporting inside and outside Japan.
