This research aims to determine how human cells orchestrate a balance of accuracy and flexibility when copying their DNA by mapping the usage patterns of error-prone DNA polymerase enzymes to identify their roles. The research will then examine how polymerase use is altered during tumorigenesis to facilitate cancer cell survival at the expense of genetic mutations. The impact of this on mutational load in cancers will be assessed by comparing the polymerase usage profiles with mutational distribution in patient cancer samples.
