研究成果の概要

アタカマ大型ミリ波サブミリ波干渉計ALMA、X線天文衛星ひとみ(ASTRO-H）などによる精密観測データ、および宇宙論的大規模数値シミュレーションに基づいて、宇宙最大の天体である銀河団中のプラズマとダークマターの関連を探究した。主な成果として、電波領域において最も高解像度の高温プラズマ観測に成功したこと、それに基づいてプラズマやダークマターの基本的性質に対する定量的情報を得たこと、銀河団中心部におけるプラズマの運動速度が従来の予想よりもはるかに小さいことを示したこと、などが挙げられる。

研究成果の学術的意義や社会的意義

本研究により、国際協力のもとで日本が大きな役割を果たして開発された最新鋭の観測装置の能力を、最大限に引き出すことが可能となった。特にALMAに関しては、従来困難視されていた広がった信号の測定がどこまで可能であるかが、本研究によって定量的に明らかになった。また、X線天文衛星ひとみ（ASTRO-H）については、２０１６年４月の運用停止による科学的な損失を大幅に補填し、次期衛星計画に対して有益な情報を提供することができた。
