| 研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research project investigates the significance of the concept of shumi in literary fiction and discourse produced between 1890 and 1960s Japan. Much more than a mere translation for the foreign notion of Taste, the language of shumi became symbolic for an idealized image of a civilized Japanese nation-state. Through an examination of this language against the horizon of literary production, my research aims to uncover the application of shumi in various socio-historical contexts and the ways in which its usages benefited specific actors and institutions in modern Japan.
