This project was able to significantly widen the area of applicability of Atomic Resolution Holography (ARH) experiments for hypermaterials. First experiments to test soft X-ray measurements were successfully conducted and show the feasibility for the detection of lighter elements, specifically Al, which is a significant building block in numerous hypermaterials. Moreover, micro-focus measurements were conducted with international collaboration at Japanese and European facilities, and were able to uncover a new phenomenon related to the ordering of icosahedral clusters within icosahedral quasicrystals and approximants. The scientific results have been presented at various international conferences. The results of this project open up the way for the investigation of the local atomic structure of other hypermaterials. The novel implementations developed in this project will also support investigations of other structurally complex systems, in particular those with large structural disorder. Furthermore, as a direct result of this project, it is also planned to evaluate how X-ray holography can complement the investigation of local disorder measured by Diffuse Scattering methods. The combination of both techniques may yield an accurate structural picture of the local atomic environment over several length scales from few atomic bonds (a few tenths of nm) to the nanoscale (a few dozen nm).
