太陽周期活動の予測とその地球環境影響の解明

研究実績の概要

太陽磁場精密観測グループは、衛星・地上の先端的観測データの高度処理を進めるとともに、ベルギー王立天文台による黒点相対数の大改訂を受けて、我が国のアーカイブデータとの比較検証を行った。また、太陽周期予測数値計算グループは、太陽極域磁場と次の太陽周期活動との非常に高い相関関係に基づいて、表面磁束輸送モデルで次期太陽極域磁場を推定し更に太陽周期活動予測をする手法を確立した。そして次期サイクルの活動が現在のサイクル24の70％程度の低さになるという予測結果を得た。この結果を論文発表するとともに、名古屋大で国際ワークショップを主催して、次期周期予測の国際相互比較を行い、予測手法の精緻化に向けて議論した。
太陽放射変動グループは、乾板太陽画像データのデジタル化・較正処理を行い、20世紀半ばの太陽活動変動のデータ解析を行って、導出したプラージュ・インデックスは電波放射変動と相関が高いことを明らかにした。また、宇宙線変動グループは、マウンダー極小期に発生した宇宙線強度異常増加イベントを高精度かつ絶対年代で決定するため、樹木年輪中の炭素14の高精度分析を行った。さらに、国際共同研究でトラバーチン堆積物中の宇宙線生成核種・ベリリウム10による宇宙線強度変動の復元を開始した。
地球システムモデル計算グループは、MRI地球システムモデルを用いて産業革命前と完新世中期の古気候再現実験を行い、ミランコビッチ周期による日射量変動に起因した気候変化を定量的に評価した。成層圏オゾン化学過程の扱いに依存して、南極域地上気温変化に最大1.7度の差が生じることを発見し、成層圏化学過程の重要性を初めて指摘した。次期大気海洋結合モデル相互比較プロジェクトCMIP6のための計算も順調に進んでいる。また、高エネルギー粒子降下による中層大気化学過程等への影響についても、素過程モデル開発と化学-気候モデルへの導入を進めた。

理由

次期太陽周期予測関係では、次期太陽活動極大の予測の準備段階として、国立天文台で長期継続観測している各種データの整備が進み、「ひので」衛星等の磁場データを用いた主要パラメータを求めるツールが完成した。また、太陽全球表面磁場の時間発展を解く表面磁束輸送計算コード開発が終わり、観測結果から太陽極小期の極域磁場を予測し更に次のサイクルの太陽活動度の予測する手法を確立できた。これで、次期サイクルの予測に関する基本目標はすでにほぼ達成しており、当初の計画を上回る成果を得ることができた。
太陽放射変動・宇宙線変動関係では、太陽彩層画像の乾板データを較正し、プラージュ・インデックスと呼ばれる太陽紫外線強度の指標を導出できるようになった。また、樹木年輪よび氷床コアの宇宙線生成核種の単年分解能での精密測定が進んだ。
太陽活動変動気候影響関係では、MRI地球システムモデルの性能検証のため古気候再現計算を行い、ミランコビッチ・サイクルによる日射量変動に起因した気候の変化を定量的に調べ、地表の気候変化に対して成層圏オゾン化学過程の重要性を初めて指摘することができた。また、高エネルギー粒子降下に伴う化学効果を導入し、過去事例で感度実験を行って、本格実験を開始できる段階となった。

今後の研究の推進方策

次期太陽周期予測関係では、太陽磁場観測データ等を用いて主要パラメータの10年スケール時間変動の解析を進め、開発してきた表面磁束輸送モデルをさらに改良し、太陽全球表面磁場の時間発展を解いて、予測した極小期の極域磁場をもとに第25太陽周期の予測を行う。
太陽放射変動・宇宙線変動関係では、較正済み太陽彩層画像乾板データアーカイブから太陽紫外線強度を推定し、地球高層大気応答との対応調査を進める。また、樹木年輪、氷床コアの宇宙線生成核種を単年分解能で精密分析して、小氷期における太陽活動周期及び宇宙線強度変動の詳細解析を進める。
太陽活動変動気候影響関係では、太陽高エネルギー粒子によるNOx, HOx生成過程を導入したMRI地球システムモデルを用いて、次期大気海洋結合モデル相互比較プロジェクトCMIP6に準拠した実験を進める。また、775年の三宅イベントを事例として、14C、10Beの移流実験を行い、地質学的試料分析研究との共同研究を推進する。
さらに、上記基本目標に加えて、マウンダーミニマムのような極端な状況を作り出す原因を、観測データ解析、試料分析、数値実験から探り、発展目標の達成をめざす。
