研究概要

ODPの伊豆・小笠原弧の深海底掘削が行なわれた後,昨年度は,船上での成果を“Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program(Vol.126)"にまとめ公表した。それに次いで,今年度は,各研究者が専門的な立場で,より詳細な陸上での成果を“Scientific Volume"にまとめた。さらに,日本人の研究成果は,地学雑誌,月刊「海洋」,月刊「地球」に特集号を組み,日本語でも成果を発表した。研究代表者の田崎は,これらの報告書,雑誌にすべて論文を投稿し,当補助金により購入した電子顕微鏡をフルに活用し,3年間で40編の成果を得ることができた。
伊豆・小笠原弧の深海底堆積物のうち,特に,火山砂,軽石に注目し,XRD,SEM,TEM,FTーIR,マイクロESCA等の機器類により,鉱物組成を検討した。その結果,火山性堆積物の中に,有機物の存在を認めた。スメクタイト,沸石などの熱水変質鉱物の中に,グロ-コナイトやセラドナイトが共存し,その化学組成は,CH,CO,CーC,COOHの化学結合を持つことが明らかとなった。今まで,グロ-コナイトの成因の一つに有機物が関与するという説があったが,今回の研究結果で,それが証明された。さらに特筆することは,この火山性堆積物の中に,多量のバクテリア化石を,電子顕微鏡で明らかにしたことである。200℃前後の熱水の循環があり,火山ガラスや造岩鉱配が変質する中に,バクテリアが存在し,化石化して保存されていた事実は,深海底にブラックスモ-カ-が存在していたことを示唆している。さらに,グロ-コナイトの生成に,バクテリアが関与していることも暗示している。深海底における物質循環において,有機と無機の境界は不明りょうであり,両者の相互作用により有機炭素からグラファイトが生成される過程も,電子顕微鏡により追跡することができた。これらの研究成果は,国際誌chemical Geologyに投稿した。
