中性子星への降着流の研究

研究概要

X線天文衛星“ぎんが"による低質量連星型X線星XB1608ー522の観測でそのエネルギ-スペクトルに重要な構造が発見された。X線強度が弱いとき、エネルギ-スペクトルの7ー20keVの範囲で、power law成分からのずれとして、浅く幅の広い吸収構造が見出された。類似した構造はCygXー1などのブラックホ-ル候補からも見つかっており、鉄のK吸収を受けていない中心天体からの直接成分と降着円盤などで吸収を受けた反射成分との重ね合わせによって説明されている。XB1608ー522での吸収構造の発見は、低質量連星型X線星の場合も、中性子星表面からの輻射の一部が降着円盤を照射することの重要性を示している。さらにX線強度が弱くなると、反射が起き易くなるように降着円盤の構造が著しく変化することも同時に示唆している。これは、今後、質量降着率とともに中性子星のまわりの降着円盤の構造がいかに変わるかを研究する上で重要な観測事実となるであろう。
“ぎんが"は1991年1月、X線新星GS1124ー68をとらえた。そしてこのX線源から振動数が2ー6Hzの範囲にあるQPOを検出した。このX線新星のエネルギ-スペクトルはブラックホ-ル候補のものと良く似ている。これらの観測事実を総合すると、低振動数のQPOの原因は降着円盤であると推論できる。
昨年度、“ぎんが"の観測で得られた重要な事実、つまりHorizontal BranchではQPOと低振動数ノイズ成分の強さがそれぞれ独立に変動するという観測事実について、詳細な理論的考察を行なった。特に、shot noiseモデルを用いて行なったsimulationからいくつかの重要な知見が得られた。shotのパラメ-タ-を変化させると観測されたような振舞いが出ることもあるが、しかしそのときのパラメ-タ-の値は余りにも極端で現実的ではないことがわかった。これから、QPOの有力なモデルであるビ-ト振動数モデルで、QPOをつくる物理的メカニズムとして考えられているplasma clumpと磁場との単純な相互作用は再検討の必要であることが明らかとなった。
低質量連星型X線星に関する本年度の研究により、そのエネルギ-スペクトルの性質やQPO現象の複雑な要素の整理が進み、大筋では中性子星への降着流に関する理解が得られたと判断できる。そしてこの研究で得られた成果は、降着流に関する今後のより詳細な研究の重要な基礎となるであろう。
