研究概要

1.磁気圏電流系の基本二要素とその動的変化に関する発見
(1)内部磁気圏(L〜4ー9R_E)の赤道面付近を流れる磁場に垂直な電流は、azimuthal電流とradial電流の二要素か成る。azimuthal電流は地球を取り囲んで西向きに流れ、radial電流は夕方ー真夜中で地球向き、真夜中ー朝方で地球から外向きに流れる。
(2)磁気圏radial電流の発見は地上観測から得られた電離圏ペダ-セン電流と整合する。
(3)azimuthal電流とradial電流の空間的非一様性の存在する場所に沿磁力線電流が発生し、それぞれ3次元電流系ル-プを形成している。これら異なったソ-スメカニズムの積分効果を低高度で観測したものがRegion1およびRegion2沿磁力線電流であると考えられる。
(4)磁気圏嵐(サブスト-ム)時には、Region1およびRegion2沿磁力線電流系は激しい変調を示すが、これは磁気圏内におけるazimuthal電流ル-プとradial電流ル-プの動的方化を反映していると考えられる。サブスト-ムのグロ-ス相では、azimuthalル-プからRegion2型、radialル-プからRegion2+Region1型、大規模対流運動からRegion1型の沿磁力線電流が発生するが、キクスパンジョン相には、azimuthal電流の局所的崩壊により、azimuthal、radialのル-プのカップリングも変化し、Region2およびRegion1沿磁力線電流系が多重構造を含む様になる。
2.沿磁力線電流系のソ-ス領域の同定に関する発見
イオンで見たプラズマシ-ト構造と沿磁力線電流との関係を初めて明らかにした。すなわちRegion2沿磁力線電流はイオンプラズマシ-トのコア部分に、Region1沿磁力線電流はイオンプラズマシ-トの高緯度部分に、さらにイオンプラズマシ-トの遠方界域にreversedーRegion1沿磁力線電流が対応する。
