研究概要

本研究の目的は、自律的に生きる個体の集合である生物の社会が、いかにして安定に保たれているかを検討するものである。そこでは、社会のあり方、維持機構、その成立(進化)といったことの解明が含まれる。初年度はとりあえず、いくつかの種を取り上げて、その解明を試みた。
集団のある個体が生殖を独占し、他の個体が手足のように振舞う系を「中央統御」、生物各個体が自己の子孫を最大にするよう振舞いながら、全体がうまく維持される系を「自律分散」とすると、社会性昆虫の中には自律分散から中央統御という進化がみられる。シロアリ類の種の比較研究から、その進化が、ワンピ-ス型からセパレ-ツ型への移行といった生活様式の変化が深く関係していることが明かにされた。
一方、全く集団を形成せず、各個体が独立して採食や繁殖を行なうヤドカリで、個体間の闘争的相互作用が、集団全体としての"適応度(集団で生産される全子孫の数)"の上昇に貢献していることが示された。これには、ヤドカリによる巻貝の殻の利用が関係していることも示された。
こうした成果とは別に、数回行なわれた研究会を通じて、一見中央統御と思われるミツバチの社会が、きわめて自由で流動的に振舞う個体よりうまく維持されていること、これまで排他的と考えられてきた両生・爬虫類に共同や協力といった見事な連携プレ-が見つかっていること、哺乳類数種の比較研究から、その社会の維持機構の考察も行なわれた。
哺乳類や両生・爬虫類に関する知見をさらに取り込むことは、今後の生物社会の自律分散的解明に大きく貢献するものと期待される。
