研究概要	二酸化マンガンは、古くからルクランシェ型乾電池などの水溶液系電池の正極活物質として用いられてきた。従って二酸化マンガンの結晶構造変化及びその電気化学的な挙動は、プロトンーエレクトロン反応系に限定して考察されてきた。一方、電池活物質一般に要求される機能(広義の減極能)に関しては、水を媒体とするプロトンーエレクトロン反応系に限定する必要はなく、リチウムイオンーエレクトロン反応系への拡張も十分考えられる。本研究では、これらの思考上の進展に伴う二酸化マンガンの基本的な考え方を吟味し、無機構造化学、電気化学的な立場を加味してリチウム二次電池用二酸化マンガンの構造を予測し、合成することを試みた。以下にその研究成果を述べる。 (1)NiAs型二酸化マンガンーこの新規物質は、六方密充填酸素配列をもち、マンガンイオン及びリチウムイオンは、共に六配位サイトに位置している複合酸化物である。この物質の酸化・還元時には、マンガンイオンの固相内レドックス反応と連動してリチウムイオンが可逆的に出入りする。従って、このものを用いて3V級リチウム二次電池とすることができる。現時点での充放電容量は、活物質1g当たり120ー160mAhである。 (2)岩塩型二酸化マンガンーこの新規活物質は、立方密充填酸素配列を持ち二酸化マンガンで、スピネル類結晶と呼ぶこともできる。このものは、マンガンイオンが、低スピン状態で存在し、NiAs型二酸化マンガンの高スピン状態とは異なるため、このものの作動電位は、4Vと高い。この物質も固相レドックス反応を結晶構造を乱すことなく起こすことが可能である。従って、このものを用いて4V級リチウム二次電池とすることができる。現時点での充放電容量は、活物質1g当たり100ー120mAh程度である。本研究の成果は、J.Electrochemical Society誌他に投稿あるいは掲載済である。
