研究概要

本研究課題では、太陽面活動が惑星間空間、磁気圏を経て大気層に至る広範囲のSTEP研究領域に関し、研究の相互の協力を密にして一チームでは不可能な観測実施項目を国際協同のもと実施可能にしていくことを大きな目的としている。本年度の研究経過は以下のとうりである。
1.5月に国内STEPシンポジウムを開催し、わが国のSTEP研究のこれまでの成果を明らかにするとともに、各課題における国際協同研究の実施状況を検討し、本年度および次年度以降の方針を決定した。
2.8月に米国コロンビアで開催されたSCOSTEP理事会、SCOSTEP総会および国際STEP運営委員会に研究代表者、大家寛が出席し、STEP国際プロジェクトの具体化、旧ソ連のSTEP研究支援、開発途上国のSTEP研究支援等を協議し、国際レベルでのSTEP研究推進のために、わが国も国際貢献をさらに続けることとなった。
3.8月米国コロンビアで開催された米国STEPシンポジウムに研究者2名を派遣し、当地に出張中の日本のSTEP研究者とともに、わが国のSTEP研究の成果を報告するとともに、次年度以降の国際協同観測実施の具体化を協議した。
4.国際STEP運営委員会委員長であるカナダ国のG.Rostoker博士を招へいし、わが国のSTEP観測状況、国際活動・貢献を紹介するとともに、国際STEP運営に関する協議、および北米と日本のSTEP国際協同観測の打ち合せを行った。
5.カナダ国のオーロラ現象観測地上ネットワーク(カノープス)とわが国の「あけぼの」衛星との協同研究のワークショップを11月開催した。この研究の中から、磁気圏サブストームにかかわる新しい知見が指摘され、更に詳細な検討を進めることとなった。
6.「あけぼの」衛星の順調な観測継続に加え、ジオテイル衛星の打ち上げ(8月)、「さきがけ」人工惑星の地球磁気圏尾部通過(9月)と、わが国のSTEP観測人工衛星群による観測は、国際STEP研究に大きな貢献をもたらしつつある。
