研究概要	重点領域研究「血管内皮平滑筋」の3年間の研究成果を本研究計画の中で総括した。3年間の研究機関にいくつかの重要な研究成果があがったことが確認された。内皮由来の血管収縮弛緩因子の研究は世界的にも一酸化窒素とエンドセリンが中心となっている。本研究計画の中ではエンドセリンに関する研究が著しく進展した。またエンドセリン変換酵素のクローニングも行われた。また特にエンドセリンノックアウトマウス作成の報告はエンドセリンの生理的意義を考える上でひとつの方向を与える者である。平滑筋研究に関しては収縮弛緩機構に関する基礎的研究の進展がみられた上に、平滑筋細胞の形質変換に関して分子レベルからの研究が一段と進歩した。また全身的調節機構の観点からはナトリウム利尿ペプチドファミリー、エンドセリンファミリー、一酸化窒素の相互作用、あるいは基礎的研究を中心に進められ、血管攣縮、血圧調節動脈硬化、循環調節などの臨床的観点から、これらの因子をどう位置づけるかという点できわめて貴重な研究成果が得られた。本研究計画の中では内皮細胞の機能に関する知識の蓄積が行われたことが重要である。また本研究課題では多くの公募研究課題の応募があり、計画研究とあわせて、わが国の血管研究の進展にきわめて重要な学問分野の形成、また研究活動の集約に役立ったことをあげなければいけない。本研究課題の終了にあたって、この学問領域のさらなる発展のために、これまでの研究成果の中から重要な問題を選んでこれを展開させることがきわめて重要であると結論された。
