研究概要	平成4年度に発足した重点領域研究の3年間の成果のまとめを作成した。全国から有力な研究者の参加を求め、HIV分子遺伝学、HIVの生物学、エイズの免疫血清血液異常、エイズの病態・予防・治療、エイズの動物モデルの5主要研究項目を柱として研究を推進してきた。研究の目的はHIV感染から、エイズ発症、さらに死に至るまでの病態、HIVの構造と機構、免疫系・神経系その他感染個体に起こる障害の機序と解明に努め、得られた知見に基づいてエイズの予防と治療に有効と思われるあらゆる可能性を検討することにある。 5主要研究項目について各代表者からの報告に基づいて記載した。高度な認識統御機能である免疫系と神経系を侵すヒトレトロウイルス感染症の全国像の把握に基づく発症阻止および治療法の確立を目指した。病態の把握については、わが国では他国に類を見ない経時的観察加納の血友病患者を対象にして、T8細胞など抗HIV免疫監視機構の詳細な解析や生体内でのウイルス変異を研究した。また合併症としての非ホジキンリンパ腫の詳細な解明や新たな臨床症状および発症要因の発見に努めてきた。さらに最近サルおよびマウスなどの動物モデルが報告されたが、その発症期間はヒトに比して極めて短いので、ヒト感染個体から提起された問題点をこれらの動物モデルを用いて解明することがある程度可能になった。なお、研究の進捗状況、ニュースの発行、公開講演会の開催などについても記載した。
