研究概要	動物実験の主な目的は、動物に一定の処置を加えてその反応を観察し、そこからヒトで起こる反応を類推することであり、これを「外挿」というが、動物種差および系統差の存在が正確な外挿を妨げている。このためには多種類の動物を用いてデータを出し、さらに反応ごとの任意の換算法を用い、ヒトでの値を類推する方法がとられる。また、近年の分子生物学の急速な進展に伴い、ヒトおよび実験動物に関する遺伝情報がかなり蓄積されてきており、遺伝子レベルで外挿を論じる事が可能となってきた。これら蓄積された遺伝情報が各種の動物実験におけるヒトへの外挿にどのように役立つのかは、余り検討されていない。本研究では薬物代謝酵素や疾患遺伝子、その他の遺伝子におけるヒトと実験動物の遺伝的相同性を調べ、発現形質の相違や遺伝子地図の差異を検討する、さらに各種実験動物とヒトの薬物代謝能の比較研究によるヒトの薬物代謝能の予測方法の研究、実験動物を用いたガンや老化研究を通じて、外挿における合理的な方法・理論を見いだす事を目的とした。本研究班は実験動物学、遺伝学、薬学、生化学の各分野からの研究者からなり、「外挿」をいろいろな角度から研究する事ができた。そして外挿に関する研究を行う事の必要性と方向性を指し示めしたことで、わが国の実験動物学者や動物実験に携わる研究者に大きな影響を与えただけでなく、今後の実験動物学の新しい分野を開拓した。さらに本研究班では、この班の研究成果を広く動物実験に携わる研究者に紹介するべく、シンポジウムを企画した。実験動物の外挿を表題としたシンポジウムは、わが国では初めての試みであったが、参加者は250名に達した。本研究班の発足から3年が経過し、この研究分野に関するイメージは大きく膨らんできたが、しかし所期の目的を達するには至っていない。むしろ著についたばかりといっても過言ではない。この研究は今後、実験動物学を中心として、生物科学の広い分野を結集して行うべき新しい学問分野と言え、この研究班の成果がきっかけとして多くの研究者が取り組まれる事を希望している。
