研究概要

バクテリアによる自浄作用と生体鉱物化作用を研究するために、河川堆積物、ヘドロ、活性汚泥、間欠泉に生息するバクテリアについて、本研究の補助金で購入した位相差偏光顕微鏡や走査型および透過型電子顕微鏡、分析電子顕微鏡、X線粉末回析などにより観察と分析を行った。その結果、中性の河川水と堆積物の中に、マンガンを濃集するバクテリアを発見した。そのバクテリアは、酸化条件下で数日の光合成によりガラス壁にマンガンを沈着させる。今まで、鉄成分を濃集するバクテリアの報告は多くされてきたが、マンガンの濃集については、まれであった。この結果はマンガン鉱石やマンガンノジュールの生成メカニズムの解明の糸口となる。また、酸性の鉱山排水溝中に生息する珪藻は、殻の外部に厚くシリカと鉄を沈着させており、中海のヘドロ中に生息する珪藻の殻の内部には、沢山のフランボイダルパイライトの生成が認められた。これらはいずれも、珪藻の生きている最中に殻の内外にSi,Fe,Sを取り入れて水を浄化し、有機物から無機物を生成する生体鉱物化作用を行っている。さらに、アイスランドとニュージーランドのアルカリ性の間欠泉の周辺には、耐熱性細菌がカルシュウムを細胞壁に沈着させて、炭酸塩鉱物を生成しているのを認めた。このバクテリアは地球上のCO2の固定に大きな役割を担っていると考えられる。これらの研究結果は、国際粘土学会や国際生体鉱物学会で発表しプロシーデイングに掲載されるほか、日本の国内の学術雑誌に公表した。
