研究概要	本研究は、「ウイルス遺伝子の分子進化に関する特徴の全体像を把握し、その進化機構を解明する」ことを目的として遂行された。特に、ウイルス遺伝子だけに注目するのではなく、それとの相互作用がウイルス遺伝子の発現や病原性にとって極めて重要だと思われる宿主側の遺伝子にも注目した。例えば、細胞性免疫に本質的な役割を果している主要組織適合性遺伝子や細胞内情報伝達に重要なプロテアーゼやそのインヒビターについても、その進化的描像を研究した。ウイルス遺伝子に関しては、日本で単離されたヒト免疫不全ウイルス(HIV)の6系統について系統樹を作成し、その進化的起源と他のHIV単離株との関係を明らかにした。この結果、血友病患者で血しょう製剤によりHIVに感染したものは、そのHIVがほとんどアメリカ合衆国から単離されたHIV株と非常に近縁であることが明らかになった。ただし、アメリカ合衆国内の地域は、西海岸から東海岸までさまざまな各地のHIV感染者からの単離株と日本のHIV株は近縁で、特にある特定の地域からの単離株と密接な関係があるとは思われなかった。さらに、このようなHIVの系統樹解析により、その注目するウイルス株がどこから由来したかという診断が可能であることがわかった。これを、われわれは「感染症ウイルスの系統樹診断」と名付け、他のいろいろな感染症ウイルスにも応用できることがわかった。このように、本研究は当初の目的を達成し、研究遂行も順調に行われたと統括できる。今後もこの方向をさらに発展させ、ウイルス遺伝子の進化機構の解明に向けて努力するつもりである。
