研究概要	実験的研究ではサルの大脳皮質における感覚情報の階層的処理に関していくつかの重要な発見があった。酒田は運動視の高次領域であるMST野周辺にある回転運動感受性ニューロンが運動方向の連続的変化から回転方向を検出していることを発表し、三次元コンピューターグラフィックスを使って頭頂連合野が立体視による平面の傾きや立体図形の識別をしていることを明らかにした。田中は下側頭回に二次元図形を識別するニューロンのコラム構造があることを光計測法で示した。斎藤は側頭連合野の視覚ニューロンの反応がトップダウン処理の影響で変動することを示した。三上は側頭葉尖端部に見慣れた対象の複雑なパターンに選択的に反応するニューロンを発見し、それが対象の部分から全体を認知する能力を持つことを明らかにした。岩村は体性感覚系の高次領域(5野)では、両側の肩や股関節の情報を脳梁を介して統合していることを明らかにした。この他公募班員によって網膜、視覚伝導路などの情報処理機構が研究され、チンパンジーの道具使用や人間の計算機能の局在のPETによる研究などが行われた。理論的研究では杉江が両眼立体視による輪郭の検出や陰影からの形状復元のモデルを構成し、乾は両眼立体視による面の復元と三次元形状の認知の神経回路モデルを構成し、顔パターンの類似度を評価する神経回路モデルのシミュレーションを行った。永野は空間情報を連続的に想起するモデルを構成し、森は異なる視点から見た三次元対象の認知は中心視野の方が周辺視野よりよくできることを心理物理的に証明し、江島はネオンカラー現象に着目して色彩処理系と明暗処理系の間に協調的な統合が行われていることを心理物理学的に示した。星宮は音の時系列を発声の運動プランに変換するモデルを構成した。この他文脈依存性の認知や多重相互結合神経回路による複合連想モデルなどの研究が行われた。
