表面張力波の分岐と特異性の研究

研究概要	表面張力波の分岐現象の数値計算とその理論において大いに貢献できた。この問題は非線型微分積分方程式を解くことに帰着され、重力パラメーターと表面張力パラメーターのふたつをいろいろと変化させて、その解を数値的に求めた。SPARCやCONVEXの計算機を使用し、H.B.Kellerのアルゴリズムを用いて様々な解を求めた。その結果、驚くべき数の解の多重存在が明らかとなった。上にも述べたように、この問題はふたつのパラメーターを持つ分岐問題であるので、既存の抽象的な数学理論の適用が可能である,とこれまでは思われてきた。ところが本研究の明らかにしたことは、既存の抽象論では説明し得ない程の大量の解が存在するという事実である。この数値計算結果が正しいとすれば、次の結論が得られることになる。「既存の分岐理論が適用可能なための条件が表面張力波の問題では成立していない」。つまり、通常の理論が適用できないので、新しい理論を構築すべきことを数値計算が教えているわけである。そのためのモデル理論を、次のような方針で構成した。(1)新しいパラメーターを導入して3パラメーターの分岐問題とみなす(2)その3次元のパラメーター空間の中で退化した分岐点を見い出す(3)その退化分岐点の解析をGolubitsky-Schaffer理論に基づいて行なう。こういう方針で我々が導いた数学的理論は、数値解の大多数を、非常にうまく説明することがわかり、その点で本研究は大変成功したと言える。ただ、問題は、この理論の中で導入した新しい第三のパラメーターが、物理的には何なのかをつきとめることがまだ出来ていないことである。直感的には、流れの深さのパラメーターがそれに対応すると理解するのが自然である。しかし、本研究では、「深さパラメーターは新しい現象を生み出さない」という否定的な結論をも導き出した。故に「温度のパラメーター」とか「2層問題化」とかの新しい工夫が必要なことが示された。これが今後の課題である。
