研究概要

電子陽電子衝突装置「LEP」は、平成6年度は、Z^0粒子の生成断面積が最大になる所にビームエネルギーを定めて、運転を行った。東京大学が主導的役割を果たしながら進めてきた国際共同実験「OPAL」では、実験開始から平成5年度までの通算事象数にほぼ匹敵する、約200万例のZ^0粒子崩壊事象を、この1年間だけで記録することができた。
東京大学の建設した電磁カロリメーターは、平成6年度も慎重に保守を行い稼働を続けてきた。その全カウンター9440本が高性能を維持しつつ作動しており、OPAL実験のほとんどすべての物理解析に重要な貢献をしている。更に、ビーム強度の今後の増大に備えて、オンラインデータ収集システムの増強を行った。また、大量データの解析のため、オフライン解析システムの整備を行った。
平成6年度の主な研究成果としては、(1)Z^0粒子の諸性質の測定精度が格段に上がった。特に、ビームエネルギーが絶対値の約10万分の1の精度まで測れるようになり、また新しいルミノシティ測定器によりビーム衝突頻度の精度も0.1%を切るようになった。これらのおかげで、電弱標準理論との比較からトップクォークのみならずヒッグス粒子に関しても知見を得られるようになった。(2)バ-テックス測定器を用いて、ボトムクォークを含むハドロン粒子の崩壊位置を正確に押さえ、中性B中間子の粒子・反粒子振動を測定した。(3)第3世代のニュートリノの質量に上限値をつけた、などがある。また、近くスタートするLEP-II実験に備えて、シミュレーションによる研究の行った。特に、W粒子の精度測定、ヒックス粒子の探索、そして超対称性粒子の探索について詳しい研究を行ってきている。
