研究概要	本重点研究は、計画班8研究グループ、公募研究から35研究グループで本年度から発足した。分子進化学の新しい展開を計るため、「形態進化と分子進化の接点の追及」および「過去に生存した生物のDNAの単離と、分子系統進化学の新たな展開」はじめとして5つの主要な研究テーマを柱として、相互に強力な連携を持つ研究組織を組んだ。 1.平成7年1月東京にて、計画班、公募研究から優れた成果をあげつつある研究者による公開シンポジウム開催した。このシンポジウムにはおよそ120人の参加者があり、活発な討論が行われ、本重点研究の発展にとって極めて有益であった。 2.平成6年8月京都にて、脊椎動物の初期進化に焦点をあて、形態進化と分子進化の接点を追及するワークショップを開いた。この会には分子進化学、動物学、分子生物学などの広い分野から20名程度参加して、活発な討論を行った。特に材料の交換、技術に関する交流を深める上で、この会は極めて有効であった。来年度以降もこうした会を継続して持つよう、総括班として努力する。 3.若い研究者を中心に、優れた研究を展開しつつある班員に研究経費の援助を行った。この援助は、これまで研究経費の理由で十分研究ができなかった若い研究を勇気づけ、予想以上の成果を上げるのに役立った。 4.「形態進化と分子進化の接点」に関する研究は順調に成果を上げているが、「化石からDNAを単離する試み」は予想以上に困難を極めている。来年度はワークショップなどを通じて、成果が上げられるよう、強力に推進する。
