研究概要	本研究は、動物の感覚情報処理機構を明らかにする研究の一貫として位置づけられ、実際のテーマとしては色覚機構の一般原理を取り扱った。本研究ではナミアゲハ複眼中の5種の色受容細胞について、(1)個眼網膜内における分布、(2)視覚中枢への投射、(3)視物質の一次構造、(4)更にそれぞれの視物質遺伝子を発現する細胞の分布を調べた。個眼内の9つの視細胞(R1-9)のうち、R1-4は個眼の遠位側、R5-8は近位側、R9は基部で光受容部位を形成する。電気生理学の結果、R1,2は紫外か紫か青、R3,4は緑、R5-9は緑か赤の細胞であることがわかった。今回クローニングした3種の視物質遺伝子(Rh1-3)によるin situ hybridizationでは、Rh1,2,3は各々網膜の遠位側、遠位および近位、近位の細胞のみを標識した。電気生理とin hybridizationの結果を総合すると、Rh1は短波長細胞、Rh2は緑細胞、Rh3は赤細胞で発現している視物質であると予想される。またRh2と3の分布から、近位層では緑細胞と赤細胞は別々の個眼に固まって存在していること、緑タイプの個眼と赤タイプの個眼はほぼランダムに分布していることがわかった。異なるタイプの個眼が網膜のなかにランダムに分布していることは色覚の神経機構と何らかの関係を持っていると考えられるが、その生物学的意義は不明である。本研究の過程で、色受容細胞の分布以外にも複眼構成の「乱雑さ」を示すいくつかの指標が見つかった。視細胞に含まれる遮蔽色素の色、紫外線照射に対して個眼が発する蛍光パターンがその例である。今後これらの指標の相互関係を解明して行く過程で、網膜構成のもつ「乱雑さ」の生物学的意義が明らかになって行くものと期待される。
