研究概要

木調査研究の目的は、北東アフリカにおける多様な生業形態を持つ諸社会を対象に人類学的調査を行い、それぞれの社会で長年培われてきた知識体系が習得・継承されてゆく文化装置を浮き彫りにするとともに、そのような装置が近代化の中で遭遇する諸問題を明らかにすることによって、今日の人類が直面する普遍的課題に学術的立場から貢献しようとするものである。
上記の目的に基づいて、各研究分担者および研究協力者は、相互に関連した個別テーマのもとに、平成7年度以来エチオピアとスーダンにおいて調査を行ってきた。3年間の研究期間のうち前半期は、現地における観察・聞き取りによって伝統的な文化の継承装置を浮き彫りにすることを目的とする調査を行い、後半期は、そのような文化の継承装置に対する近代化の影響を検討することをめざすとともに、そうした文化の持続および変化が、異なる社会の間でどのように共通・相違点がみられるのかを比較・検討する作業を行った。平成9年度は、前年度までの現地調査を補足するとともに、各研究者が調査の成果を土台として、論文・口頭発表を行い、諸社会が抱える問題の普遍性・個別性を検討した。その結果、近代化への対応は個別社会によって異なっており、その要因として、それぞれの社会が持つ文化継承装置がいわば外部の影響に対するパラメータとして働くことが見いだされた。これらの成果は、今年度わが国で開催された国際エチオピア学会をはじめとする関連学会で発表され、同時に本調査研究の報告書が本年度に発行された。
本研究は、伝統的な教育・学校教育・文化的アイデンティティという研究上の視点を共有する共同研究によって、文化の継承装置と近代化との関係を明らかにしていく一つのモデルを提示する研究としての見通しをつけ、調査研究の目的は達成されたと考えられる。
