研究概要

平成7年度に引き続き、実用的な海洋大循環モデルを完成させるべく、各国(日本、米国、オーストラリア、中国、ロシア、フランス)の観測データと高解像海洋大循環モデルとの比較研究を推進した。主な成果は以下の通りである。
1)Vinayachandran博士を招聘し、スリランカ沖に現れる冷水ドーム(スリランカ・ドーム及びベンガル湾・ドーム)の季節変動機構について高解像度モデルおよび新しいLevitusデータを用いて調べた。その結果、モンスーンに伴う局所的な風のカ-ルにより冷水ドームが発達し、減衰期にはインド洋東岸から伝播してくるロスビー長波が重要な働きをしていることが明らかとなった。
2)Chang博士を招聘し、海面漂流ブイの軌跡から流速場の変動特性を調べ、高解像大循環モデルの結果と比較検討を行った。その結果、流速変動分の運動エネルギー分布のパターンは良く一致するが、モデルで再現された値は観測結果に比べ小さくなる傾向があることがわかった。
3)Molcard博士を招き、インドネシア通過流域のフランスの係留観測結果と日本側のモデル結果との比較検討を行った。この結果、チモール海域において数十日周期の大気の季節内振動に関連すると考えられるシグナルが海底付近で顕著に現れていることが明らかとなり、海洋大循環モデルを駆動する外力についても、季節内振動を解像できる時空間スケールの風応力場が必要不可欠であることが示唆された。これを受け、共同研究者の升本、和方はそれぞれ米国、オーストラリアの共同研究者を訪問し、衛星データの海洋モデルへの活用可能性について協議した。また、研究代表者はフランス側共同研究者を訪問し、海洋モデルを用いたチモール海域における短周期変動の再現可能性について協議した。
4)山形,金子,荒井,磯部は、これまでの研究成果についてブリスベンでオーストラリアの共同研究者Godfrey博士と協議すると共に、西太平洋地球物理国際会合の場を利用し、これに参加した米国、フランス等の研究者とワークショップを行った。
5)研究代表者は、共同研究者Lukas,McCreary両博士とともに米国地球物理連合の発行するJ.Geophys.Res.の特別号を出版し、全世界に頒布した。
