研究概要

本研究は、「連合王国科学工学会議(SERC)及び日本高エネルギー物理学研究所(KEK)間のラザフォードアプルトン研究所(RAL)スポレーション中性子源(ISIS)を用いた中性子散乱研究に関する協定」(1986年12月締結)に基づく研究を実施することを目的としている。
本年度は、乱れた系のダイナミックス、低次元磁性体の量子効果、高温超伝導体及びその関連物質の磁気励起と格子振動の研究を中心にして共同研究を実施したが、以下のような重要な成果が得られた。
フラクタル構造をもつ系の動的性質を明らかにする目的で行ったパーコレーション点近傍の磁性体の高エネルギー分解能実験により、フラクタル格子固有の非腺型励起であるフラクトンが、長波長領域でのスピン波にクロスオーバーしていくことがはじめて確認された。この研究によって、強く乱れた系が秩序をもつ場合の原子レベルでの運動の形態が明らかにされつつある。
磁性体における新奇な量子効果発現機構の解明が世界的に競って行なわれているが、今回、2本足梯子格子においてエネルギーギャップの存在が確認された。これは磁気的な基低状態がシングレット状態にあることを示しており、酸化物高温超伝導の発現機構に関連した研究として注目されている。また、1次元強磁性体のスピン波励起にあらわれる量子効果がスピン値(S)とともにどのように変化するかという問題を解くことを目的とした研究がCsVBr_3(S=3/2)を用いて行なわれた。
その他、非晶体における原子の運動形態、水素結合物質の相転移機構を解明するための重水素置換効果による構造変化、蛋白質の折り畳み構造と生体機能の関連を調べるための局所構造の振動的性質、を調べるための実験研究を実施した。
