研究概要

(1)ジルコンの高精度年代測定を行うために、レーザーサンプリング法の開発とICP質量分析計の改造を行った。検出器の多重化により、当初の目標の鉛同位体分析精度0.01%程度が得られるようになり、またレーザーサンプリング法の開発により、固体資料の10〜15ミクロンの微小領域から同位体分析ができるようになった。
(2)紫外蛍光スペクトルスキャナーを整備し、それにより資料の微量元素の濃集層を検出し、そのデータを用いて堆積物の縞々を時系列に変換することにより、そのリズムの周期を求めた。ESR顕微鏡によりサンゴや鍾乳石の格子欠陥の濃度分布を測定し、成長速度と気象の関連を追及した。また陽電子消滅時間イメージング装置を開発し、縞状鉄鉱の計測と解析を行った。
(3)地球を含め惑星の軌道運動は、極めて安定であり、現在の境界条件のもとでは数十億年の時間スケールでも大きな不安定が起きにくいことが分かった。また地球-月系の力学時計の変化に及ぼす大陸分布の変化の影響を数値的に見積もることができた。
(4)白亜紀・第三紀の地層変異は小惑星の衝突によるとの仮説があるが、堆積したイリジュムの量、大気酸素分圧の減少、絶滅した生物の種類などの調査から、太陽系が分子雲に突入したする方がより整合性があることが分かった。また、生物絶滅は、個々のクレータの年代と相関があることを確かめたが、周期性は統計的に有意とは認められなかった。
(5)宇宙線源となる星間物質の基本的性質について調査を行った。また、「とけい」としての役割を持つ放射性元素について、地球上のどこに、いつ、どの程度配分されたか調査を始め、装置開発と予備実験を行った。
