研究概要

地球環境科学における中核的研究機関の在り方について、分担者を中心に討論を行った。まず、分担者により各分野の現状と地球環境問題に対する取り組みを報告し合った。地球環境問題の解決を目指した具体的な取り組みが必要なこと、人文・社会・自然科学を取り込んだ新しい総合的な取り組みや科学が必要なことが明らかにされた。これらの一般的な検討ののち具体的な課題、在り方の検討に入った学術審議会の建議にある4つの柱、
(1)人間と自然環境の相互作用の解明
地球環境の変動のメカニズムの解明
地域レベルでの解明
対応技術、方策
のそれぞれについて具体的な課題の検討を行った。
また、中核的研究機関の組織的な課題についても検討を行った。既存の研究施設、研究組織との関係の解明が急務であり、そのためにも既存の研究施設と中核研とを結ぶネットワークの機能及び役割が重視される。特に現在の体制では、国際的な研究計画対する対応、海外における長期的な観測網の維持、大型機器の開発などが不十分であるとの認識を得た何らかの組織的対応を取る必要があろう。最後に流動性、国際性、学際性が必要との認識が示された。
