研究概要

大小の観測データ検討会・研究会を開いて、GEOTAIL観測結果から代表的なイベントを選び、磁気圏前面および尾部の磁気圏境界面、前面の衝撃波、プラズマシート境界層で生起している物理過程の研究が進められてきた。特に、11月に金沢市で開催された国際会議「地球磁気圏尾部研究の新たな展望」においては本科研費によって得られた成果が議論の中心的な役割を果たし、今後の当該分野の研究進展にインパクトを与えたと言えるであろう。また、米国およびロシアの衛星との共同観測けっかについての研究が芽生えてきた。代表的な研究成果を下記に列記する。
1.昨年度の研究で芽生えた磁気圏境界面および尾部において磁気リコネクションの研究が一段と進展し、粒子加速・加熱過程のミクロな物理過程が明らかにされつつある。また、プラズマシート境界層におけるslow-mode shockおよびそのForeshock regionにおけるイオン加熱過程の詳細が明らかにされた。一方、米国のポーラー衛星やロシアのインターボール衛星との共同観測の結果、磁気リコネクションが磁気圏サブストームの発達過程において重要な役割を果していることが発見された。
2.磁気圏遠尾部のマントル/ローブ領域において予想外に多量の電離圏起源の酸素イオンが太陽風起源のプロトンと共存していることが発見され、その詳細な解析の結果、酸素イオンは昼間側磁気圏境界面において太陽風磁気と結ばれた磁力線上にあることが明らかにされた。電離圏起源のイオンが磁気圏内に侵入してきた太陽風プラズマとどのようにして混合し、尾部に輸送されるか、その詳細は今後の重要な研究課題である。
3.太陽風プラズマが磁気圏低緯度境界層から磁気圏内に侵入してくることが、昨年度に発見された近尾部プラズマシートにおける低温プラズマのソースであることが明らかにされた。従来、プラズマシートにプラズマを供給するプロセスとしては磁気リコネクションによるマントル/ローブからの供給が最有力と考えられてきたので、プラズマシートのプラズマの起源と輸送過程に新たな問題を提起している。
