研究概要

本年度は、各研究開発項目について基本設計を行うとともに必要な機器を導入・整備し、開発に着手した。計画初年度ではあるが、すでに初期宇宙の理解に直結する重要な科学的成果があがりつつある。以下に各項目の研究成果を示す。
1.軟X線および硬X線を用いた深宇宙探査
これまで開発を続けてきた定バックグラウンド検出器が、1999年度に打上げ予定の次期X線観測衛星ASTRO-Eに、硬X線検出器として搭載されることが決定された。そこで本年度はその電子回路部の仕様を固めるとともに、結晶シンチレータ、フォトチューブ、シリコンPINダイオード、波形弁別用LSIなどの主な構成要素を試作した。また検出器1本を試作し、特性試験を開始した。「あすか」衛星を用いた観測では、世界の第一線を開拓する多くの成果をあげた。銀河団や楕円銀河では、高温ガスの重元素組成が測られ、宇宙の化学進化の重要な情報を得た。暗黒物質の階層性および相対論的電子による逆コンプトン過程を、ともに世界で初めて検証した。その他、白色矮星、電波パルサーを含む連星、銀河面X線放射、BLAZAR天体、宇宙X線背景放射などが研究された。
2.活動銀河の多波長モニター観測による宇宙論
本研究で用いる専用望遠鏡を設計し、仕様を決定した。集光力や星像サイズ、また検出器からの要求を総合し、口径2m焦点比9のRC光学系を備えた自動制御望遠鏡とした。主鏡ブランクを購入し、モニターに用いる可視・近赤外撮像装置とそのデータ取得システムの開発を行った。広視野カメラの検出器の開発を進めるとともに、活動銀河の光度の時間変動に関する理論研究を行った。
3.遠方銀河サーベイデータの解析による観測的宇宙論
可視光域での天体カタログ作成のために、画像データから天体を自動検出し、その位置、明るさ、形状を測定し、データベースを作成するソフトウエアを開発した。また、様々な測光システムの特性と、そのシステムにおける銀河の色を調べた。さらに、宇宙論研究のテーマの絞りこみと、既存のデータを用いた予備的研究を行なった。
4.サブミリ波望遠鏡による中性炭素原子の銀河広域観
1.2m可搬型サブミリ波望遠鏡の基本設計を行なった。光学系としては対称カセグレン‐ナスミス方式を採用し、小型・軽量化を図った。その上で、今年度はアンテナ架台を設計、製作した。同時に、現有の口径18cm可搬型サブミリ波望遠鏡の整備を進めた。
5.粒子線観測による宇宙初期・素粒子現象の探求
カナダ・マニトバ州で行われた気球搭載型超伝導スペクトロメータによる宇宙粒子線観測実験の結果を解析して、170MeV〜1.2GeVの低エネルギー領域で40以上の反陽子事象を発見し、同時に一次宇宙線中の反物質探索や陽子・ヘリウムのエネルギースペクトラムの決定を行った。また、粒子識別能力を高めるためのエアロジェルチェレンコフカウンタなどの開発を進めた。
6.高感度ボロメーターによる暗黒物質の直接検出
極低温検出器設置予定場所の鋸山微弱放射能観測施設内の環境放射能測定を行ない暗黒物質の検出感度を見積った。検出器は間もなく完成する。東京大学構内で4カ月以上の連続長時間試行運転をした。太陽axion検出用超伝導電磁石と太陽追尾用架台はすでに製作中である。X線検出用PINダイオードの極低温下での作動を確認した。
7.数値シュミレーションによる初期宇宙の探求
星・超新星爆発における重元素合成過程、重力崩壊型超新星の爆発機構、宇宙の大構造形成および銀河団の進化、等の数値シミュレーションに必要な計算機を導入し、計算機コードの開発と最適化を行った。主な結果は次の通りである。(1)Ia型超新星での核反応燃焼波の線形安定性の解析、光度曲線の計算を行なった。(2)楕円銀河を取り巻く高温ガスの熱的に安定な解を発見し、X線観測との比較からIa型超新星の出現率と星からの質量放出率を求めた。(3)GRAPEを用いた星ガス系のSPHシミュレーションを行ない矮小銀河の形成過程と化学力学的進化を明らかにした。(4)II型超新星における非球対称爆発と元素合成の計算を行った。(5)宇宙X線背景輻射に対する銀河団の寄与が軟X線領域で重要であることを発見し、観測との比較から宇宙論パラメータに対する制限を得た。
