研究概要

平成9年度シリア・デデリエ洞窟発掘により、平成5年度に引き続き、再び保存の良いネアンデルタール人骨を発見した。平成5年度の人骨は、ほぼ全身の骨格が出そろう世界で初めての資料として国際的に脚光を浴びた。ただ、残念なことに顔面部が欠損していたために顔かたちに関する復元研究が困難であった。ところが、平成9年度資料は顔面部が良好に残り、前回の資料を補完すると同時に、西アジアでは初めての顔面形態の復元を可能とするネアンデルタール人骨資料として非常に高い評価を受けることは必至である。
すなわち、デデリエ洞窟はネアンデルタール人骨の宝庫であり、同時に、中期旧石器、動植物化石の豊富さにおいて西アジアわ代表する遺跡である。ネアンデルタール人とわれわれ現代人の祖先との関係を次のような文脈で研究する上で最適の条件を備えた遺跡である。
(1)中期旧石器の技術形態学的解析に基づくデデリエ・ネアンデルタール人の行動復元
(2)地層内で見つかった約100の炉跡に基づくネアンデルタール人の火の利用と洞窟内生活復元
(3)大量に発見された動物植物化石に基づく環境復元及び生活復元
(4)洞窟堆積物の地質学的、年代学的研究によるデデリエ・ネアンデルタール人の生存年代の復元
(5)ネアンデルタール人骨については、その形態学的な研究と同時に以下の研究を行う。
(6)3次元形状形態計測装置に基づく立体復元、実体モデル復元
(7)人骨のミトコンドリアDNA分析
(8)人骨コラーゲンに基づく安定同位体分析による食性復元、年代測定
保存の良いネアンデルタール人骨、大量のムステリアン旧石器、多種多様の動植物化石、まさに三拍子揃うデデリエ洞窟資料を素材とする研究は、現代人の起源論争の舞台にフィールドの世界から新しい知見をもたらし、斬新なモデルの構築に貢献できる。
