研究概要	地球上の環境のうち塩及び乾燥は植物の生育に対し、最も重要な意味を持つと考えられ、これまでにもこれらの要因に対する応答を対照とした研究は多い。いかにして植物に塩及び乾燥に対する耐性を獲得させるかは、最大の関心事である。プロリン合成系と耐塩性に関して新しい成果が得られ、ベタインやポリオール蓄積の遺伝子導入にも成功した。本年度は8月にカナダ・バンクーバーで行われた国際学会に合わせ、アメリカ側から5名(別経費)、日本側から4名(うち1名は別経費)が一同に集まり、研究連絡を行い、これまでの研究の進展と今後の進め方を議論した。これまでの結果からプロリン、ベタイン、ポリオール等の適合溶質の合成系に重要な酵素遺伝子一つを植物に導入し、耐性を獲得させることでは不十分であり、複数の関連する遺伝子の同時導入を考える必要があることが議論され、今後の研究の進む方向として考えられた。複数の遺伝子の導入は現時点でかなり技術的な難しさはあるものの、不可能ではなく、今後の研究が期待される。しかしながら、一方では導入された遺伝子の働きを正しく解析することも重要で、植物体の中で塩がどのように移動し、各部分でどのように特異的な傷害を示すか、そのメカニズムについても生理的・生化学的な研究が要求される。さらに、上に掲げた適合溶質以外の新たな物質の探索をも必要としている。また、塩や乾燥のストレスはその他のストレスと複合的に作用することも今後の問題として見逃せない。例えば酸化ストレス耐性を持つ植物は塩や乾燥ストレスにも耐性であるという現象が指摘されている。
