研究概要

本研究の目的は、(1)植物のさまざまな性表現を資源分配戦略として統一的に説明すること、(2)「多くの生物が性を持つのはなぜか」という問題を解決すること、(3)「性の進化におけるゲノム間コンフリクト」の進化的帰結を解明することである。(1)については、ツリフネソウ属植物を材料として、花弁、雌しべ、雄しべへの投資に花内では正の相関があること、一方で花サイズと花数には負の相関があることを示した。これは、植物のさまざまな性表現を統一的に扱うためには、花内でのトレードオフを仮定していた従来の多くのモデルでは不十分であり、花サイズと花数のトレードオフを考慮する必要があることを示した点で大きな成果である。(2)については、ヒヨドリバナ無性集団とヨツバヒヨドリ有性集団に感染するジェミニウイルスの分子進化の比較から、有性集団ではアミノ酸置換が加速されることを示す証拠を得た。このデータは、病原体とホストの共進化が性の利点を生み出すという仮説を支持する。また、植物と植物寄生菌の間で見られる遺伝子対遺伝子関係において、多数のアレルが維持されている現象について数理モデルを用いた解析を行い、病原体とホストの拮抗的共進化が多数のアレルの維持を促進することを明らかにした。また、制限修飾系や反復配列などの利己的遺伝要素が減数分裂組み換えの起源において、組み換えを有利にする要因としてはたらいたという仮説について、実験的検証をすすめた。(3)については、最近急速に蓄積されてきたゲノミックインプリンティングを受ける遺伝子に関する情報をレビューし、一見さまざまに見えるパターンが、基本的には親子のコンフリクトを考えた数理モデルによって統一的に説明できることを示した。
