研究概要

本研究は、星間一酸化炭素分子COのJ=3-2(345GHz)およびJ=2-1(230GHz)の二本の輝線を観測できる受信システムを新たに構築し、それをチリのESOおよび野辺山にて運用している私たちの60cmサブミリ波サーベイ望遠鏡に搭載して、銀河を観測を行い、それによって天の川銀河の星間分子ガスの物理状態を明らかにすることを目的として以下の研究を行った。
1.受信機フロントエンドの製作
入力光学系を設計・製作し、4K閉サイクル冷凍機クライオスタットに取り付けて、230GHz帯の受信機フロントエンドを構成した。性能試験の結果、受信機雑音250K(SSB)という満足すべき性能を達成した。350GHz帯については、ミクサーの性能評価を行いながら、ミクサーマウントの最適化を行った結果、受信機温度500K(DSB)の性能が達成された。
2.観測・データ処理・解析システムの増強
遠隔操作による観測の実現に取り組んだ。60cm望遠鏡をインターネット経由で制御する方法を開発し、野辺山の60cm望遠鏡1号機を用いてその有効性を実証した。データ解析計算機を新たに導入し、観測データの柔軟な処理・解析をスピーディーにできるようにした。
3.60cm望遠鏡による観測とそのデータの解析
野辺山とチリの二台の60cm望遠鏡を用いて、銀河系内分子ガスの観測を行った。特に銀河系中心部のサーベイを完成させた。また銀河系外域の渦状腕のマッピング観測を行い、そのデータの解析から、腕に沿ったほぼ周期的な構造を見いだした。60cm望遠鏡による観測から予想された分子雲の内部構造を、野辺山の45m望遠鏡による広域高分解能観測により実証した。
