研究概要

南極昭和基地のHFレーダーは国際HFレーダー網観測(SuperDARN)の一環として活動している。本研究目的は、昭和基地を含めたSuperDARNレーダーを用いて、電離圏や磁気圏で生起するプラズマダイナミックスの形態を明らかにする事を目的にしている。
本年度の測定面での特記事項は、SuperDARNを中心と位置づけての、EISCATレーダー、GeotailやAkebono衛星との同時観測を企画し、磁気圏境界面付近プラズマの時間的・空間的変動について貴重な観測情報を得る事ができた。
SuperDARN観測データを用いての研究成果概要は以下のとうりである。
1.オーロラサブストームに伴い、夜側磁気圏が急激に地球方向に早い速度で移動する事実をつきとめた。
2.昼間側の磁気圏では、太陽風と地球磁気圏との相互作用による早いプラズマ対流が存在する事を、新たに開発した高時間分解能観測で明らかにした。
3.衛星で観測したグローバルなオーロラ形態とHFレーダーとの同時観測から、可視オーロラの発達過程と電磁気圏電場の変動との相関関係を明らかにできた。
4.極域でのプラズマ対流が赤道付近のジェット電流と良い相関がある事が分かり、極域の磁気圏電場が瞬時に赤道域まで達している事を明らかにした。
