研究概要	近年の癌の基礎研究の進展は、癌発症の機構についての理解を深める上で大きく貢献していると共に、癌の診断・治療に関して新しい方法の開発.導入可能にしている。この様な進歩に対する我が国の研究者の貢献は大きい。しかしながら、発癌に関わると思われる遺伝子で未同定のものが多く残されていることも事実であり、近代的なゲノム解析の手法を利用しながら癌関連遺伝子の探索が進められている。また米国で先駆的に進められているDNAチップを用いた解析により、発癌に関する理解が深められてきている。地理的に孤立している我が国の研究者は、自らの研究成果を欧米の研究者と討議しまた欧米の研究成果を速やかに収集して、国際的な視野で研究を推進する必要がある。そのために本研究では、我が国の研究者をアメリカ、カナダの先進的がん研究の場に送り込み、個々の研究者から又研究集会から積極的な情報収集を図った。特に、基礎研究の情報交換、シグナル伝達分子の立体構造解析に基づく癌治療薬の開発に関する情報収集と遺伝子治療等の治療法に関する情報交換、モノクローナル抗体を用いたがん治療やヒトゲノムプロジェクトの中に位置するがん研究の現状に関する情報交換に重点を置いた。非派遣者は、「がん特定研究」総括班の意見を参考にして選んだ。そして、基礎研究から臨床研究まで幅広い領域の若手研究者を中心に、22名の研究者をアメリカ合衆国に派遣し、癌の分子生物学的基礎研究、新しい治療法に関する研究、ゲノム医学に関する交流を行って、癌研究の先端的推進に貢献した。
