研究概要

国際学術研究は、赤外線宇宙天文台(ISO)の超低温冷却軌道望遠鏡を利用した国際共同研究により、始原銀河の形成・活動および恒星の誕生・終末期の進化を解明することも目的としたものである。ISOを利用した観測としては、(1)赤外多波長領域銀河サーベイ計画において従来は不可能であった遠方にある始原銀河の探査観測、(2)マゼラン星雲内の晩期型星の赤外多色測光により恒星進化終末期における質量放出の果たす役割を研究するための観測、また(3)微細構造線の分光マッピングにより従来未開拓の光解離領域の物理構造を解明するための観測がすでに行われている。以上の観測から目的の情報を抽出するには、ISO観測装置の特性を解明し、その基礎の上に立ったISOデータの詳細な解析と、ISOと相補的な他の波長帯での観測を地上から行わなければならない。
本年度は、国際協力によるISO観測装置の特性の解明に重点をおいてのべ6名をフランスに派遣した。その結果、ISO観測装置対する理解が深まり、ISO観測データの解析が大きく進展した。特に、始原銀河の探査観測のデータ解析はほとんど終了することとなった。地上からの追求観測に関連して2名をアメリカに派遣し、観測の打ち合わせと観測そのものを行った。当初予定していたキットピーク天文台とピコベレタ天文台での観測は、より観測条件の良いハワイ島マウナケア天文台のカリフォルニア工科大学サブミリ波天文台の10m望遠鏡やハワイ大学の2.2m望遠鏡を用いて行った。
以上の活動の結果、ISOで発見された遠赤外線源の数は予想された値の約10倍であること、晩期型星の周囲にはそれまでのモデルでは考慮されていなかった分子ダスト生成領域が存在することなどがこれまでに分かった。
