研究概要

北極海洋科学会議(AOSB:Arctic Ocean Science Board)により立案され実施されている国際北極ポリニア研究計画の一環として、カナダ主導によるノースウォーター国際研究計画(NOW)が平成9年度から開始された。本国際学術研究はNOW国際研究計画の重要な部分を担うもので、本年は研究航海計画立案のための作業部会を米国で開かれた。来年度に計画される本格的な研究航海へ向けての研究航海が7月に実施され、国内からの2名の研究者が乗船した。表面海水をポンプ揚水し、海水の蛍光強度を強度を連続的にモニタリングすることにより、海洋基礎生産者の指標であるクロロフィル量のポリニア海域表層における分布パターンの観測に成功した。また、平成10年に行われる本格的研究航海までの冬期間をカバーした試資料の取得のため、時間分画式セディメントトラップ及び海流計を吊下した係留系をポリニア海域に設置した。これは平成10年7月の航海で回収される。同航海において計画される研究内容・参加人員を確定するために、カナダから3名の研究者を招へいし、東京においてワークショップを開催した。同時に乗船に関する設営的な諸問題を解決した。また、カナダ北極圏での研究活動と関連し、スバールバル地域においても生態系変動の研究を実施した。国際ツンドラ実験計画(ITEX:lnternational Tundra Experiment)の一環として、ニーオルスン地区にてオープントップチャンバーを用いた実験を実施した。これは温暖化によって引き起こされる植物の生長、フェノロジーの変化を連続的にモニタリングしようというものであり、特にチョウノスケソウ群落の花数や花の密度について調査した。更に氷河末端モレーン域に合計60個の方形区を設定し、種子植物群落と土壌水分条件について調査した。またITEX計画の比較研究である国内高山域での調査結果からの情報を解析した。
