研究概要

4月から7月にかけポリニア海研究航海が合計4レグ実施された。大観測点(6点)からCTD観測のみの小観測点(86点)まで様々な観測が計画された。レグ1と3では特に動物プランクトンの研究を中心として摂餌速度の日周性や消化速度の実験が行われた。基礎生産の研究はすべてのレグを通して継続することを原則としつつも各レグでの特色ある研究を行った。表層海水連続観測、自然蛍光強度鉛直プロファイル観測、吸収係数測定用試料採集、光一光合成速度曲線の実験的測定、クロロフィル蛍光量子収率の測定等が行われた。レグ4では昨年に設置したセジメントトラップ・海流計の係留系を回収し、さらに2年目の冬期間を通した観測を目的とした新たな係留系を設置した。回収されたトラップサンプルは合計112本にのぼり、10ケ月間の生産活動を記録した貴重な標本が得られた。ポリニア周辺海氷上での野外調査に1名が参加し、4-5月に流動・熱フラックスの現場観測を実施した。12月にカナダから3名の研究者を招へいし中間的なデータ解析を実施した。平成11年2月にカナダ・モントリオールでのノースウォーターポリニア研究国際ワークショップに2名の国内研究者を派遣し、観測結果の比較検討や平成11年度の研究航海打ち合わせを行った。ポリニア海域との比較研究としてのバレンツ海への研究航海に1名が参加し、基礎生産沈降過程の研究を行った。スピッツベルゲン、ニーオルスン地域における海鳥営巣地において、1名の研究者が海鳥捕食行動と餌生物の調査を行った。海鳥野外観測データ解析のため、英国から同分野の研究者1名を招へいした。南極海域のペンギン類を対象とした捕食行動と餌生物の比較調査を行った。また、氷河後退域における陸上環境変動調査のため、約2ヶ月間の間1名の研究者が同地域の滞在し、昨年度に続きオップントップチャンバーによる陸上植生変化の調査を行った。
