研究概要

生体物質研究を含む広範囲な物質科学の諸問題を解決するためには、原子や原子磁気モーメントの空間構造及びその動的構造を明らかにすることが極めて重要である。中性子散乱は物質の静的及び動的構造を直接知ることのできる強力な実験手段である。
近年の加速器技術の進展によって可能となったパルス中性子発生技術は、測定可能な運動量及びエネルギー空間を従来の定常型中性子源(原子炉)に比べて、飛躍的に拡大できることが明らかとなった。しかしながら、パルス中性子を用いた世界最先端の物質科学研究を行なうには、高エネルギー研のスポレーション中性子源(KENS、1980年に世界で初めて運転を開始した)で得られる中性子束の数十倍以上の強度をもつ英国ラザフォード・アプルトン研究所の中性子施設ISISとの共同研究が必要である。このため我が国は世界最高性能のチョッパー型中性子分光器MAPSを、英国と共同してISISに設置し共同研究を開始することとしたた。
この事業を遂行するため、平成9年度より新たな国際協力事業として日英科学技術協力事業経費が認められた。平成9年度の経費は5、600万円である。平成9年度より3か年かけて、日本と英国が協力して、ISISに新型チョッパー型中性子分光器MAPSを建設する予定である。日本側は分光器の中枢部である中性子検出器の開発及び設置を分担する。すでに分光器の設計作業は終了しており、平成9年度は、現地において検出器の性能試験と設置作業を開始した。141本の一次元位置敏感型中性子検出器を設置するとともに、ISISに既設の中性子分光器を用い、量子梯子格子の磁気励起、2次元スピン系のフラクトン励起の観測等の日英共同研究を実施した。
