高分子ゲルを用いた生物様運動素子の創製

研究概要

ゲル運動素子によるケミカルモーターの構築 有機溶媒に膨潤した構造規則性高分子ゲルが、水上で高速運動することをわれわれは見出した。このような運動素子は化学ポテンシャルを直接力学エネルギーに変換する運動システムであり、従来の熱を経由するエンジンと根本的に違う。われわれはその運動を制御することによって、持続時間30分、瞬間最大起電力は15mVに達するケミカルモーターの作成に成功した。ゲルの高効率運動は水―ゲル界面の摩擦抵抗が低いことを示唆している。
ゲルの表面摩擦特性 低抵抗,高効率なゲル運動素子を実現するためには、ゲルと固体、またはゲルとゲルの界面における摩擦抵抗も極めて重要である。本研究では初めてゲルの表面摩擦に関する系統的研究を展開した。平成10年度までは、ゲルの表面摩擦は固体―固体摩擦で一般的に適応されるAmontonの法則が成り立たず、かつ摩擦係数が0.001と極めて小さいことが明らかとなった。平成11年度はゲルのその特異的な摩擦機構を実験的、理論的に解明する努力を重ねた。その結果、ゲル―固体、またはゲル―ゲルの界面での相互作用がゲル摩擦の支配的な因子であることが分かった。ゲル摩擦のこの反発・吸着機構は間接軟骨の摩擦機構を理解するのに重要なヒントを与えてくれた。
ゲルの表面構造制御 高分子ゲルの表面物性はゲル合成時に用いたテンプレートによって、著しく異なることを発見した。疎水性テンプレート上で合成したゲルは親水性テンプレート上で合成したものより1-3桁摩擦係数が低く、また、両社は細胞に対する吸着性も異なる。この「テンプレート重合法」は筆者らが本研究推進過程で新しく開発した新規の合成法であり、そのメカニズムは極めてユニークである。これらの結果はゲル表面特性の制御に極めて重要な知見を与えると考えられる。
