研究概要	大谷は、フェノール/ポリビニルブチラール系ポリマーブレンドの炭素化後に細孔の生成しない原因を各種の物性測定により追跡し、閉孔の生成と収縮による消失をよることを提唱し、このことを800nmのポリスチレン粒子とフェノール樹脂のポリマーブレンドのモデル前駆体を用いて実証した。光来は、大きさの異なる球晶を含有するナフタレン系ピッチを調製し、小さな球晶をもったピッチからの繊維は、小さなドメイン、狭いフィブリル、短く低いプリーツとなり、圧縮強度は、同一弾性率を有するメソフェーズ100%のピッチから製造した繊維より圧縮強度が1.5から2倍になることを示した。菱山は、高温熱処理したグラフォイルにホウ素をドープし,面間隔d_<002>,電子物性のホウ素濃度依存を測定し,炭素原子のホウ素原子置換によるフェルミ準位低下によって説明できる結果を得た。また高濃度ホウ素ドープ試料に対して弱局在効果に由来する負磁気抵抗を見出した。内山は、ホウ素を真空蒸着したポリイミドフィルム25枚を積層・ホットプレスして黒鉛体を作製し、HP条件と黒鉛002面のフィルム面内配向性等を調べた。ポリイミド中の異種元素の放出後に加圧することにより良好な黒鉛体が得られ、ホウ素添加により黒鉛体の配向性が向上するとともに、フィルム面間の接合強度が上がることを明らかにした。田邊は、タンタルをアロイングした樹脂炭の耐酸化挙動の解明を行った。タンタル添加に伴う樹脂炭の電子構造あるいは化学構造に大きな変化は認められないこと、酸素との反応中間生成物の脱離速度に大きな違いがないこと、酸素に対する活性点が著しく減少することを解明し、活性点の減少が耐酸化特性向上に寄与していることを突き止めた。
