研究概要	動物の初期発生における組織および器官形成について分子生物学的および発生生物学的に調べた。まず筋肉分化と形態形成運動が調べられ、筋肉分化には細胞運動が必要なことが明らかになった。その時アクチンフィラメントの形成やMyoDやXbraの発現との相関関係もわかった。また神経形成や器官形成に関与する新規の遺伝子が次々とクローニングされ、その機能についても調べられた。また神経形成におけるパターン形成についてBMPとフォリスタチン、コーディンとの関係について調べ、BMPの機能を明らかにした。更に線虫C.eleganceを用いて、体の長さを調節するリガンドCet-1の遺伝子をクローニングし、その機能を明らかにした。神経形成に重要と思われるBMPの細胞内シグナル伝達機能、特にいくつかのSmadの役割を明らかにし、細胞内のクロストークについての新しい機構を提唱した。更にニワトリの肢芽形成におけるAER細胞の発生段階と位置情報について細胞の選別とその機能発現について調べた。その結果、新規の細胞接着分子もみつけられた。それと同時に進行帯細胞間の選別におけるPTKの機能をはじめて明らかにすることができた。そのような時PTKと細胞選別および中胚葉分化に強い相関があることがわかった。また脊椎動物の左右軸に関する新規の遺伝子Pitx-2とPitx-3が発見され、これらの遺伝子が動物の胚発生で左右非対称な形態形成を生ずる重要な遺伝子であることを明らかにした。そして、Pitx-2は単に体の非対称性を決めるだけでなく、肢芽の筋芽細胞の分化にも大きな役割を果たしている。一方、ショウジョウバエのArgosによるEGF受容体の制御機構とRas/MAPKシグナルの制御に関する新規の遺伝子の同定を行った。
